Herrison’s prize catch
WINNERS: Herrison Youth with the Knockout Cup
WINNERS: Herrison Youth with the Knockout Cup

AFTER two years of heartache Herrison Youth captured the Dorchester Evening League Knockout Cup with victory over Martinstown at the Rec last night.

In a close encounter, taking the Twenty20 format, Youth scored the winning run in the final over to erase memories of two successive final defeats at the hands of St George's.

Winning skipper Rob Cole was delighted to get his hands on the trophy.

He said: "At the halfway point I thought it was going to take something special as after dropping three important catches the writing was on the wall.

"But credit to Matt Tatchell, who I'm glad got man of the match, and Garry King as they batted really well and kept up the run rate. Although they got out near the end we had enough petrol in the tank.

"Having lost to Martinstown twice in Division One and losing the cup final the two previous years it was our time.

"The best team probably won on the night but there wasn't much between the two sides."

Martinstown captain Chris Read was gracious in defeat.

He said: "Herrison did really well and their two batsmen won it for them. I thought we tried our best but it wasn't good enough.

"I think Herrison found the gaps a lot better when they were batting and we didn't bowl our best. Hopefully it'll be our year next year."

Although losing Steve Clifford (5) early on, Martins-town were making good ground as Tom Adams (26) and Dan Belt (56) took the score to 54 before the former fell to the bowling of Paul McCann (1-36).

Rob Waite (40) arrived at the crease and put on a 76 partnership with Belt. The overs were ticking by and as Martinstown aimed to increase their total as much as possible, Waite was bowled by Cole before Nick Quintrell (1) was run out.

That left Herrison needing 139 to win. And the mountain became a lot steeper when opening batsmen Simon Griffiths (5) and Nigel Wood-ruff (3) were clean bowled by Belt (2-42) and Read (1-27) respectively to leave Youth at 15-2.

But man of the match Tatchell (57) stepped up to the plate alongside Garry King (43) and the pair went about making huge inroads on the Martinstown target.

The deadly duo were eventually removed but Tom Cottrell and his skipper were able to cross the finish line with five balls to spare.
