Sunken barge to be cut in two
 |
| UPLIFTING: The operation to raise the Longsands barge, which sank off Preston beach, gets under way using a large crane |
THE MAROONED Longsands barge in Weymouth Bay is being split in two to speed up the salvage process.
A 42-metre salvage barge, called the Naples, pulled up alongside the Longsands yesterday and began work on cutting the barge.
The rusting barge, which ran aground at the Overcombe end of Weymouth beach last October, will be lifted up on the Naples' large crane before it is cleaved in half.
The latest chapter in salvage operation of the Longsands is similar to the fate of the MSC Napoli, which was beached off Branscombe in Devon last January and also had to be split in two so it could be removed from the seabed. A spokesman for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council said: "A large barge called the Naples has arrived with the aim of cutting the Longsands barge in two and lifting it out of the water.
"The obvious intention is to speed up the process. How long it takes is largely down to the conditions when they get there."

Cheaper than the thousands wasted on fireworks.
