Police in appeal over ‘beach rage’ incident

A GRANDFATHER who took his family for a day out was left upset when he was forced off a Weymouth beach by an irate bather, police said.

The bather, a man in his early 30s, was abusive and pushed the older man backwards using his stomach, according to officers.

They are now keen to speak to the man responsible and anyone else who was on the beach at Small Mouth, near Ferrybridge, and witnessed the incident.

Sergeant Tony Smith of Weymouth police said a family group, which included a man aged 68 and his two granddaughters, went on the beach with their three dogs, two boxers and a Labrador-collie cross.

Sgt Smith said: "The dogs ran around on the beach which irritated a man.

"He remonstrated with the older man in an abusive manner. He had his fists clenched as he pushed him backwards and the older man feared he would be punched."

He added: "I understand there were other people on the beach who saw what happened. I'd like to speak to them so I can build up a clear picture."

Witnesses and anyone with information about the assault, which happened last Saturday afternoon, can contact Sgt Smith in confidence on 01305 222222.

I expect it irritated everyone except the dog owner.....

Not surprising that the guy got irritated by three dogs running around and using the beach as a toliet. I would not be best pleased if a dog owner showed complete disregard to other beach users.

“The bather, a man in his early 30s, was abusive and pushed the older man backwards using his stomach, according to officers”. Are we sure this is not an irate beached whale with a large stomach. Also I am very surprised that the three dogs were not describe as a pack to add more spice to this incident. As a dog owner myself I totally agree that the “pack of dogs” should have been under control on the beach.

Was it a "NO DOGS" beach ? If so the bather was quite right to be irate.

MIG..The likley problem would be one of communication ! The irate 30yr old bather was deemed to abusive, this just about sums up how society has gone.
no one appears to have a civil tongue anymore, there are ways & means of approaching any problem, and this wasn't it.
You only have to listen to the verbal abuse from todays teenagers when they are politely confronted about their anti social behaviour (as an example).
TV news items and paper reports tell the same story almost everyday.

No one appears to have any respect for anybody else either. Letting three dogs loose on a beach certainly shows no respect for those already there. As to the abusive behaviour do we know all the facts? Did the man become abusive straight away or after any request to get the dogs under control was ignored?
