Stabilisation is key for Curtis
 |
| HARD WORK: Malcolm Curtis |
WEYMOUTH chairman Malcolm Curtis is hoping all the hard work over the summer will soon start bearing fruit both on and off the pitch.
The property developer is optimistic about the forthcoming Blue Square Premier campaign but admits there is a lot more to be done to stabilise the club.
He said: "Everyone has worked incredibly hard all summer and hopefully that will now start bearing fruit in the new season.
"Manager John Hollins and his assistant Alan Lewer have put together a good team and there seems to be a desire there to fight for each other which was sometimes missing last season.
"If we could get off to a good start in the league and by the end of September be in the top half then it could turn out to be a
successful season but if we are
in the bottom six or seven
it could be a difficult one."
Curtis has revolutionised the club's brand since the end of last season and also imposed a new method of working in terms of its day-to-day running.
He added: "I have never worked so hard in my life. Not only are we trying to turn things around on the pitch but we are also trying to turn an almost bankrupt business into one that can at least wash its own face.
"That is doubly challenging with the current market with people watching their money but that is the situation and I think we are making steady progress.
"We knew we were not going to be able to fix things overnight and there is still a lot to do but we have come a long way since we started."
One disappointment during pre-season has been the size of the crowds at the Wessex Stadium but it is hoped the lure of competitive football will improve those statistics.
Curtis said: "We are doing everything we can to get people here. We have had 25,000 leaflets printed advertising our next three games.
"We are also looking to take the club mascot into the town on Saturday morning and hopefully all that will result in more fans coming to watch us."
The Terras had to endure a relegation dogfight last season, which they eventually pulled away from, and Curtis is hoping that does not occur again.
He said: "This season is about stability. I would be disappointed if we ended up in a relegation fight and to be honest I do not think my ticker could take that again, so mid-table is the minimum but we would like to be competing for the play-offs."
