COUNCILLORS have warned they may have to raise car parking charges in Weymouth and Portland if the budget requires it.

Traders celebrated when Weymouth and Portland Borough Council said it would consider 'freezing' charges for 2009-10 and keeping pay and display for both on-street and off-street parking at this year's level.

But members of the council's management committee meeting amended the recommendation to say 'generally' keeping the pay and display charges at this year's level.

Councillor Peter Chapman said: "Parking charges are a huge income stream and it would be unreasonable at this stage, so far in advance of the budget setting, to tie ourselves in terms of parking charges."

Coun Tim Munro said: "We should not hold ourselves hostages to fortune.

"We can't afford to decrease the amount of funding we have available to do other things with. We don't know yet - we might have to double or halve charges."

Committee chairman Coun Mike Goodman suggested councillors also revised the wording of keep the estimated income figure for off-street parking the same' to read: 'maintaining the required income '.

Councillors voted in favour of using the proposals as a basis for further discussions with the Chamber of Commerce, Town Centre Management Group and Waterside Weymouth.

Other items for discussion include raising off-street permit and season ticket charges by 10 per cent and raising residents' parking schemes to at least £49.50 - a rise of 3.1 per cent - subject to a review.

A five per cent increase to all other on-street permits and dispensation charges is also in the pipeline.

Councillors voted against considering charges on car parks that are currently free to use in Church Ope, Easton, Fortuneswell, Hambro, Lord Clyde, Oakley Place, New Ground, Southill and Wellington Place.

Parking charges up = less people using the car parks = less income = increased charges = less people using the car parks and so the merry-go-round continues.

Possibly very few Councillors read these comments, however a simple and logical solution might be to hold car parking charges AND Councillors allowances.

Sorry I said simple and logical, this cannot work in council circles.

A re-think on the parking charges eh.. so soon after being informed they will be 'frozen'. Will W & P.B.C. ever make a decision.
Parking charges are high enough now, so with this in mind and the 'tacky' bucket & spade shops plus the second rate main stores, even more reason to continue shopping in Poole or Yeovil.

Abpye.. Granted certain areas of Yeovil are run down, no more or less than any other town. BUT at least there are plenty of parking areas.. where you can park ALL day for the cost of an hour in Weymouth. No traffic queues to sit in for what seems an eternity in Weymouth, decent sized M & S, BHS, Tesco, Azda, Wilkinson, Woolworths a vitually litter free shopping area, far fewer drinkers/beggars sat on benches or practically every corner. Perhaps you ought to give it a try sometime IF you can get out of Weymouth before the shops close.

I'm sure with the cost of fuel, travelling to Yeovil or Poole to save on car park costs is the way to go!

Typical, great big spread in the paper with councillor mug shots hailing freezing charges as something good. Then great big u turn by councillors. When punters see the cost of the car park charges they will also be doing a U turn out of the car park.

I really wouldn't mind paying the extra increase if the car parks in Weymouth and Portland were well maintained, like proper surfaces and even CCTV, but not all of them are. Its a catch 22 situation but at the end of the day, businesses in the town will probably suffer. Car parking fees here are already ridiculous compared with Poole - £1 for 4 hours on a Sunday! Good value and that why I go there and Taunton to go shopping. Better road systems! If I really have to go to Weymouth, its by motorbike, because parking is free! Public Transport is a joke around here anyway so people won't use that. Keep the fees as they are or even lower them!

I can never understand the logic in that either.

I think the plan is to go to Poole say once a month and do a really big shop, you can park at Sainsbury’s produce your parking ticket at the till and get your money back & still have time for a wander round. Perhaps if our council had a little forethought and maybe a little imagination they could actually increase their revenue by reducing parking charges if any member of the council would like me to explain this novel concept I would be more than happy too. Other than that ask any school children to explain it to you .

MikeMan Does anyone really park in Weymouth to go grocery shopping? If they do they are a bit daft when Morrisons and Asda both have free parking.

Ask Archie... your posting, after mine is really immaterial to me. Travel distance to either town is exactly the same, so my costs have not been saved, nor have they been increased BUT have actually had MORE time to shop around. Mt saving has been in the cost of the car parking. This is what the original article is about. Parking Costs.
Graham...who lives on Portland has further to travel than me, but is still has the same opinion.

Why can't they introduce Pay on Exit? I have to admit I would rather travel to Yeovil rather than pay Weymouth's charges. Petrol is about 2p cheaper there too and also shopping in general is cheaper. It would cost me no more to travel that distance than to travel to Weymouth and pay the parking.

What-ever happened to a forward thinking consistent strategy... no soon do they announce a price freeze...then.... they panic like a shop keeper with a broken freezer... and say hold on we can't do that...its so mickey mouse... this the trouble with electing small town shopkeeper types.. they have a herd mentality... rather than thinking outside the box.

Unless you need a mobile phone or a cup of overpriced coffee there is little point in going into town, so the car parks might as well be free.

One day councillors decide to freeze car park prices, next they they decide they won't and may even double them! All this will do as various learned posters here have said, is drive the trade to other towns.
It's 80p for two hours in Bridport. When Weymouth's car parks are empty, apart from councillors with their free passes, and the black hole has got even blacker, will councillors realise just what a greedy hash they have made by sky high parking charges.

johnthetyke, Rotherham says...

Beware W&PBC. As a frequent holidaymaker, weekly parking charges are already horrendous. I either use the unpatrolled and insecure Swannery or pay my hotel £35 to park in a space I have to wait approx half an hour whilst other cars are shunted around whenever I want to take mine out.
A further increase in fees may be acceptable for the arty-farty types and beautiful people who will visit in 2012, but their visit is a one off and will undoubtably see Cowes and Cannes as a more attractive prospect than Weymouth in subsequent years.
The cost and availability of parking is quickly becoming a consideration when determining one's holiday budget.
