YOUNG eco-warriors starred in the reopening of a new and improved supermarket in Weymouth.

The Co-operative Food store in the Littlemoor Shopping Precinct was a scene of green when pupils from Wey Valley School and Sports College cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the £215,000 renovation.

The school signed up for The Co-operative’s Green Schools Revolution, which is a programme designed to nurture the next generation of green pioneers, and pupils helped to launch the new store.

The school was given a donation of £200 towards environmental projects and a hamper packed with fresh produce to inspire their work on healthy eating.

Rob Cole, business manager at Wey Valley School, said: “We’re a Co-operative academy, which means our staff and pupils work together with the community for events like this.”

Pupil Alex Downes, 12, said being eco-friendly is important for people to do. He said: “We’re here because our school is green and eco-friendly, which is a good thing.”

Jan Dyer, store manager, said: “I think the store looks brilliant, and it’s the shop of the future with new ideas and more extensive range.

“It’s a cheaper shop and with a much bigger range of products and services.

“In the current economic climate, we know it’s more important than ever for shoppers to be able to find great food, at great prices, close to home.”

She added: “The Co-operative is committed to playing a real role in the life of the Weymouth community and it is fantastic that Wey Valley School, a Co-operative Trust School and a Green School, could join us on our special day.”
