IT WAS hats off to Weymouth and Portland as a new Monopoly game was launched to celebrate the borough.

Weymouth and Portland Monopoly was launched in style yesterday when a giant board with pieces and dice was sent to the top of the Weymouth Sea Life Tower before a giant sand sculpture of the game’s logo was unveiled on the beach.

The board features 22 landmarks of the area voted for by the public. Among the famous places are attractions like Sandworld, Portland Castle and Nothe Fort.

Businesses connected to the seaside and tourism like Rossi’s ice cream and Daniels fish and chips have their own spaces, and the area’s Sailing and maritime history is celebrated with Weymouth Sailing Club, Condor Ferries and Weymouth Harbour.

The Dorset Echo even has its own space.

Monopoly manager for Winning Moves, Dan Taylor, said he was delighted with how the board had turned out and thanked the people of the borough for getting involved and voting for their favourite places.

He said: “It’s great to create a board that the people of Weymouth and Portland can be proud of.

“The hardest part was choosing the 22 places. There are thousands of locations that could have made the board – it was our job to pull them together and create a board that best reflects Weymouth and Portland.”

Mr Taylor said his favourite part was the traditional Mayfair place taken up by Weymouth Beach.

He said: “It’s a great location.”

Raquel Cubillo, marketing manager of Weymouth Sea Life Tower, said they were delighted to have not one but two entries on the board with both the tower and the Sea Life Park being voted on.

She said: “We are over the moon that we got two spots on the board.”

She added that it was a vote of confidence from the community.

Sandworld sculptor Mark Anderson created the Monopoly logo out of sand.

He said he was pleased with the way the sculpture had turned out and the fact the attraction had a place on the board.

He said: “It’s brilliant.”

Weymouth Football Club has a pink space on the board and supporters and mascot Rivbit were at the beach launch.

Iain Stone from the club’s board said: “It’s fantastic to be part of it.”

Weymouth and Portland Borough spokesman for tourism and culture Ian Bruce said the game was the ‘icing on the cake’ of the ‘wonderful year’ the borough had experienced.

The game is available now from Howley’s Toymaster, WH Smith, Toys R Us and online at Amazon.co.uk and ASDA.com for £24.99.
