Weymouth businesses get in the pink to fight cancer

The Wear it Pink day is organised by charity Breast Cancer Campaign to fund their research into a cure for cancer.

The annual event encourages everyone to dress up in pink, bake cakes or do a raffle to help fund their vital research.

Elegance Hair staff at Littlemoor Shopping Centre raised more than £100 for the charity.

Staff donned pink hats and wigs, baked cakes and did a raffle for the charity day.

Prizes included manicures, pedicures and meals out.

Junior stylist Angie Cain said: “The raffle was really popular with the customers, so far we have raised more than £100 and we are hoping to raise as much as possible.”

Miss Cain said that the salon staff started to raise money for Wear it Pink a few years ago when one of the girl’s mum’s had breast cancer. She has now recovered.

Miss Cain said it had been a really good day and everyone had enjoyed it. She said: “It was really fun. The atmosphere was really great- really buzzing.”

In Dorchester, The Edge Creative Hair Design on Melstock Avenue, held their fifth annual Wear it Pink event.

Business partner Emma Hill said staff got customers to play a game, where all the staff brought in pink bras and the customers had to guess whose was whose.

They put them up on a washing line in the salon.

Mrs Hill said: “It proved very popular.”

She added: “I think it was a nice team building exercise – everyone felt part of it.”

Who did what...

•Staff at iRoka salon, in Gloucester Mews, Weymouth, gave customers cup cakes and beauty and pampering treats.

Dressed in pink and with pink ribbons in their hair the staff offered half price cuts to people and 10 per cent of cuts and product sales was donated to Wear it Pink.

Owner of the salon Trina Mortimer said she had wanted to support the event as her mother had died of cancer when she was 47.

She said: “I had a scare with it a few years ago too. I think it affects so many families.

Manager Lisa Wrightson took the plunge for charity and did a sky dive last Saturday, raising £550 for Breast Cancer Campaign. She said: “It was very scary but an absolutely fantastic experience.”

She said: “We had a feature in the paper last week that raised a lot of money for it.

“We were very honoured to take part.”

• The Party Shop in Abbotsbury Road, Weymouth, above, had a raffle with 35 prizes and sold cup cakes.

Jan O’Brien said that the cause was very dear to her as she was diagnosed with breast cancer this year. She said she would ‘for ever more’ support the charity.

She said: “I’m on the road to recovery but I wanted to give something back for the wonderful care and support I have received.”

Mrs O’Brien said that staff at the shop had a ‘wonderful day’.
