A SELECTION of coins dating back 170 years were cashed in for £74,400 at an auction in Dorchester.

The collection of 17 specimen coins, right, went under the hammer at Duke’s Fine Art Auction.

The rare lot included a gold £5 coin and the coins were fitted in a presentation case supplied by Spink and Son of London.

Duke’s auctioneer Deborah Doyle said: “Gold coins are highly desirable at the moment, due to the ever increasing value of gold.

“Single gold coins such as sovereigns, are selling well at auction, often for more than the scrap value.

“This Spink collection was complete, making it a very desirable set, as quite often the coins become separated over the years.

“It created worldwide interest, with strong fierce bidding on the day.

“Many clients that were out-bid went away from the saleroom extremely disappointed.”
