A FEAST of two-wheeled fun provided the perfect start to half term for youngsters in Dorchester.

The BMX Jam offered young riders the chance to learn new tricks and pick up speed at the Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre sports hall.

The indoor venue meant the free event for eight to 16-year-olds was not ruined by the wet weather as the youngsters raced around the course.

Experienced riders from The Front skate park in Weymouth were on hand to offer tips to the beginners who attended the event and show their skills.

As well as learning how to bunny hop, the riders took part in time trials around the indoor course with various prizes up for grabs.

West Dorset District Council sports development officer Amelia Hooley said: “The aim is to encourage people to get involved in BMXing and get them going to their skate parks.

“It’s linked to the Olympics with the BMX racing there – we wanted to try and keep promoting it and getting more people taking part.”

Teo Derrien, 11, from Dorchester, said a friend whose dad owns a BMX company encouraged him to go along and get a taste of the sport.

He said: “It’s really cool. I scoot down to the skate park normally but now I’m going to try and take my bike down there.”

Harvey Davies, 11, from Weymouth, said: “I really enjoyed it. I probably will do it again in the future.”

The BMX Jam in Dorchester was the first in a series of events running this half term, with another session at Budmouth Community Sports Centre in Weymouth tomorrow from 10am to 12noon. Equipment is available but limited so anyone who has their own is encouraged to bring them along as well as their BMX bikes.
