A NEW pop-up art gallery is proving popular in Hope Square, Weymouth.

More than 160 visitors flocked to the launch event of the new arts and crafts exhibition by local artists.

Artwey, Weymouth and Portland’s art group, is behind the gallery which has opened up in a spacious new location in Brewers Quay facing the square.

The new venture, which follows the success of several pop-up restaurants and shops over the summer, is set to stay until January, open from 11am to 5pm daily except Mondays.

Artwey artist Caroline Nairn, of Sutton Poyntz, said: “So far we’ve had a lot of people in. There were over 160 people coming through on the first day, it was very good.

“It involves 16 artists and a variety of things. I’m exhibiting some mixed media and print work, there’s also craft, jewellery and original artworks.”

Artwey spokesman Olivia Nurrish said the aim of the exhibition was to ‘bring a bit of life back to the square’.

She added: “Here at the arts and craft gallery you will be able to see a variety of work, much of which is inspired by Dorset’s beautiful and unique landscape.

“From paintings and prints to textiles, jewellery, glass and sculpture, there is something for everyone to enjoy. “In addition you will be able to purchase pocket money presents such as mugs, coasters and cards.”
