It started slowly, inauspiciously, the sound a little muddy, the vocals undermixed.

But Saint Joan rose above it, mixing the old and new and gradually warming up.

By the time we hit All The Way From America (only slightly mired by an unnecessary wave along) and the surprisingly mid-set, yet still exquisite Love And Affection, she was well into her stride. The Weakness In Me was exceptional.

But don't think this was merely a greatest hits package, for there was ample material from new album Starlight and Joanie, now in her seventh decade continues to cut it.

She can rock it with the best of them, plays hard-assed guitar and we were literally overpowered by funk as the tight three-piece band got into the groove.

Joanie may still be shy, but is certainly more talkative these days and supremely confident in finishing, after a stomping Drop The Pilot, with the jazzy new album-closer Summer Kisses.

Exquisite.

Special mention for folkie Chris Wood, who wrung super sounds from his guitar and had a nice line in witty, gloomy songs, and show opener, 'local talent', Ellie Williams, whose song That Day, describes her battle with thyroid cancer.
