A PUB landlord has called time on a fundraising year.

Anthony Storey has bid farewell to his beard, which he started growing last November in his own take on Movember moustache-growing fundraising.

Anthony, 35, of the George Inn Portland, ditched the three inches-long facial fuzz in front of a crowd of regulars at the Easton pub.

He said: “It feels much lighter now I haven’t got the beard. I haven’t found it as cold as I thought it’d be.

“I haven’t done any trimming of the beard, I’ve just groomed it.

“The beard grew to about two or three inches and it feels very strange to lose it.

“It was similar to Father Christmas’s except it was very black.

“People say I look much better now and it’s taken 16 years off me.”

He collected £700 for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and for Julia’s House Children’s Hospice.

Dad-of-two Anthony opted to support the BHF because his father Phillip died of a heart attack 15 years ago to the day Anthony carried out his fundraising feat.

He said: “My dad lived in Romford, Essex and was an industrial chemist. He did lots of community work and was involved with lots of young people. I think that’s why I’ve gone on to try and make the George a community pub where we try and do some fund-raising.”

A raffle was also held along with an auction where people made bids to do some of the shaving.

Homemade cakes, made by bar staff, Anthony and his children, were also sold on the night to raise money for the cause.

The beard shaving was carried out by Eve Spence of Flair hairdressers on Portland.

After a year of having a beard, Anthony said he became used to it.

“As time went by I got more used to it. My children seem to have got used to seeing me with it but at the beginning they weren’t so sure.

“My daughter Sophie was very interested in plaiting it.”

Anthony and his wife Tracey and their children Sophie, eight, and Oliver, five, moved to Portland three years ago.
