RESCUERS told how they went to the aid of scores of sailing dinghies which were capsized and dismasted by a freak gust.
Members of Lyme Regis Sailing Club were helped by the town’s lifeboat when the sudden squall caught them off guard last Sunday.
Lifeboat helmsman Elliott Herbert said: “It was a very sudden squall and about 16 dinghies were involved.
“The initial report we received was that two people may have been missing. But we worked closely with the sailing club’s patrol boat and pretty quickly between us we accounted for everyone.
“I believe two dinghies were dismasted, and one young woman was clearly distressed and looked after in the lifeboat station.
“The sailing club patrol boat worked very efficiently and we operated together to resolve the situation.”
