TIC scoops excellence award

LYME Regis Tourist Information Centre has scooped a tourism award.

Staff at the centre, which is run by West Dorset District Council, are celebrating after winning a South West Tourism Excellence Award.

They have been chosen as one of the winners in the Tourist Information Service of the Year category and will be presented with their award at a ceremony in February. This year marks the ninth time in as many years that a West Dorset District Council-run Tourist Information Centre has been shortlisted for an award.

Robert Gould, Leader of West Dorset District Council, said: “It is great news that Lyme Regis Tourist Information Centre has won this award and I’d like to thank the team for all their hard work. They provide a great service to visitors and residents. I am delighted that even in these tough economic times West Dorset District Council is still able to provide award winning services while keeping council tax levels low.”

The South West Tourism Excellence Awards celebrate the ‘best in the West’ and aim to recognise the leading businesses and individuals in the tourism industry.

Staff at the centre were tested by a mystery shopper and they also entered a written application. The team will find out if they have won a Gold, Silver or Bronze award at the South West Awards Ceremony on February 8 at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Meanwhile in Weymouth, our TIC is scheduled to close with the Pavilion. Driving through Lyme last week, I saw the lovely display of colour light bulbs all down the main street. Here we just have the green lasers. Could we swap Lyme Regis's councillors for the muppets we have in Weymouth & Portland? Can it get any worse I ask?
