THOUSANDS of revellers descended on Dorset to celebrate the New Year in style.
Pubs and bars across the Weymouth and Dorchester area were packed with people having a good time and showing off their fancy dress costumes.
Despite rain and wind during the day the weather eased a little for the night’s celebrations.
Gearing up for the night’s festivities were party-goers at The Party Shop in Abbotsbury Road, Weymouth.
Hundreds of people came through the doors to pick up their costumes and buy last minute accessories- popular choices this year were Disney characters and super heroes. But the most popular costumes were those in ‘Gangnam Style’ after South Korean pop star Psy.
Chris Rutter from Cambridgeshire chose a Roman Centurion’s uniform. He and his friends had come down for the New Year’s party.
He said: “We come here most New Year’s Eve’s because it’s a great night.”
Phantom of the Opera, Darren Cole, went out in Weymouth with his friends.
He said: “I left my costume to the last minute- all my friends are going out as gangsters, so I’ll stand out.”
He said that at least he would be dry in the cape.
Mr Cole added that the best bit about New Year’s was just getting everyone together.
He said: “It’s just getting everyone together and going out and having a big blow out for the end of the year.
“Everyone works hard and we deserve to have some fun.”
Greg Lexster and Laura Farnham went out in Abbotsbury with their friends.
They said their theme was cartoon characters.
Miss Farnham said: “We were going to do Scooby-Doo. We have a five-year-old son Freddie and he has a Scooby-Doo outfit and we were going to join in with him.”
Mr Lexster said the pair were looking forward to 2013.
He said: “The best bit about New Year’s is just seeing everyone else’s outfits and seeing how ridiculous they can be and getting as merry as you can.
“And just trying to have a good time and letting your hair down.”
