Cry for help after arsonists strike in Littlemoor
11:30am Saturday 5th January 2013 in News By Rachael Burnett
THREE vehicles and a fence were damaged in the second arson attack in Weymouth this week.
Members of the Littlemoor community are calling for action to be taken after two cars were destroyed in a blaze that also damaged a van and a fence.
Firefighters were called to The Doves at around 2am yesterday after arsonists torched vehicles in a resident’s car park.
The attack comes after another vehicle was destroyed by arsonists in Alamanda Road on Tuesday and is the latest in a spate of vandalism in the area.
Darrin Hall, a self-employed decorator whose van and fence was damaged in the blaze, said ‘enough is enough’.
He said: “Crime has gone up in this area and it’s getting out of hand.
“Littlemoor has always been a high crime area but since the lights have been turned off it has only got worse.
“Enough is enough and we’re all fed up of it.
“The council and police need to take action because if nothing is done it will just get worse and worse.”
The Doves resident added: “My van was damaged in the fire but I was lucky it didn’t go up in flames like my neighbours’ cars.
“It would have been my livelihood gone, I’m a one-man band and my whole business is in that van.
“These people don’t realise how much trouble they cause for innocent people, it’s just mindless.”
A 78-year-old woman whose car was destroyed said the vehicle was her lifeline and only way of getting around.
The pensioner, who did not want to be named, said: “I live on my own and relied on my car to get around.
“It was my lifeline and I don’t see how I will be able to replace it because I don’t have the money.
“This has got to stop.”
Another resident whose car was destroyed, who also did not want to be named, said she feels victimised and shaken.
She said: “It was a shock, it’s not the first time my car has been targeted and I feel like I’m being victimised.
“When I was shaking like a leaf, it was horrible.
“My car is my only way of getting to work, it wasn’t valuable to anyone else but it was to me.”
Dorset county councillor Andy Cooke urged residents to support the police.
He said: “The general population of Littlemoor have worked incredibly hard to build a decent community and it’s very depressing that a small minority are standing in the way.
“If you do know who is responsible, you need to come forward.
“The community has got to stand up and help the police find the culprits.
“This is clearly quite a serious situation that has got to be sorted out.”
Cars destroyed in blaze attacks
THE attack comes after a spate of vandalism in recent months, including another car fire earlier this week.
Firefighters were called to Alamanda Road, near Bincombe Valley Primary School, at around 11pm on Tuesday.
A vehicle belonging to a 73-year-old cancer patient was destroyed when arsonists torched it where it was parked in the Finches on December 9.
Dorset Police arrested a 13-year-old in connection with the incident.
There were two fires, believed to have been deliberately started, on Saturday, December 15.
Firefighters were called to a bin fire in Beverley Road at 7pm and a vehicle fire in Louviers Road at 10pm.
On December 2 a lit piece of paper was put through the letterbox of a house in Louviers Road.
In September, a car and a caravan were destroyed after being deliberately set alight in Geelong Close.
Hunt for vandals ‘intent on criminal behaviour’
Dorset Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
Inspector Les Fry said: “Enquiries are currently ongoing in this incident and we are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact us.
“We are doing a lot of work in Littlemoor at the moment, working with the local authorities and keeping local councillors up to date on what’s going on.
“We are aware of a number of people in Littlemoor who are intent on criminal behaviour and disrupting what is a nice area.
“Police will take robust action on tackling them and this behaviour will not be tolerated.
“Hopefully with community support we will be successful in dealing with the antisocial elements in the area.”
Contact PC John Kirk at Dorset Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

This would be justice, not the pathetic slap on the wrist punishments handed out by out of touch magistrates. These kind of families are infecting society across the country like a disease, and because they know that no-one will in authority will bother to do anything, they just make life a misery for everyone.

Maybe that's why the Apache gunship was hovering the other night? Surely a small tactical nuke could take out the whole area and solve the problem forever?? I was told 60 years ago to keep at least a mile away from the place, it was doomed and all who live there, since the Black Death in 1660. And my granny was never wrong.

The Police are incompetent and have failed in their duty of care to protect the public. how long are we going to let them get away with. If the Police cant protect the people then the people need to protect them selves.

This is the second time a car has been burnt out in this car park , in happened about 5 years ago when there was street lighting and the police did very little then, l thought arson was a major crime next to murder but the police seem to treat it as an inconvenience to there day job, and as for the local Councillor's there's no point in having them they are next to useless.

And again people are assuming that the children whom are doing this actually live here, And again its probably the same person or group of people, Perhaps if the Police bothered to get out of their cars and walk the streets then maybe they just might catch them.

The police are not "doing their best", they sit in their cars eating doughnuts. The criminal justice system isn't fit for purpose, if a person was caught next to a car with a lighter, ready to burn a car , he/ she/ it wouldn't be arrested - as " the crime hasn't been committed yet". I rang the police as I saw my neighbour bring attacked in his own garden, the response- my neighbour could have said something to start the situation and as I didn't hear it , there was nothing they could do.....and the doughnuts were getting cold!

And stating that the Police are more interested in doughnuts is simple a stereotype. If you phone 999 the police are legally obliged to attend. And the public should not rely on the police 100% they clearly through what ever reason find it hard to do their job. The public needs to start stepping up to the plate and intervening when they witness crime. Now that's a deterrent. Perhaps theses kids would stop burning cars if they thought they would get a kicking for it.

Admittedly there is reference to a 13 year old being arrested (arrested, not charged and last time i checked citizens of the United Kingdom were still innocent until proven guilty) for one of the incidents but it was also reported just last week that another of the incidents was committed by a grown man.
There are a lot of very respectable families that live at Littlemoor. These people are not much different from everybody else here. They work hard for a living and want the best for their children. The efforts of these people are hampered by the bigoted snobbery that comes from the narrowmindedness of the rest of Weymouth, like the views that I read so often in the comments section of the Echo; that everybody who inhabits Littlemoor is scum. This is so not true. I have lived here for over 30 years and whilst I do admit there are some terrible families here, the majority of them are not 'native'.
WPBC seems to like to use Littlemoor as its dumping ground for 'ASBO families', adults with serious mental health issues and those with very dodgy pasts. Most of the crime here is committed by somebody from one of these groups and a lot of the rest is committed by people that have travelled here from another part of the borough. I caught 2 teenagers in my garden stealing my kayak last year- neither of them were from the estate. I had a bike stolen, again the culprit was from another part of Weymouth. A couple of years ago somebody set fire to the brand new play area. He wasn't from here either. Instead these people think that they can come here and do what they please as they have had it drummed into them from an early age that they needn't have any respect for the estate.
There is a stigma attached to Littlemoor and everyone here is almost as responsible for it as the scum that go around burning poor innocent people's cars.

Maybe the finger pointing should be more at WPBC?
Correct me if I am wrong, but I think i'm right in saying that WPBC actually get 'paid' to house these problem families on Portland, and it's probably the same for the Littlemore area to.
Seems like a vicious circle.... they make a few quid by housing the families, then crime rates go up, then we, the taxpayer, has higher council tax to help fund the police.
I always say this, and I will once again.... our country is too soft on these criminals, these sort of crimes used to be few and far between due to fear of being caught, not only by a respected policeman, but then the p***ed off father who would hand out a hiding to the offender.
I work in a part of Africa where these crimes do not take place, for fear of the punishment according to the locals who I work with.

Over 6,000,000 UK citizens are criminalised and somewhat alienated.
Over 6,000,000 UK citizens risk their health by consuming cannabis of uncontrolled and doubtful purity.
Some illegal cannabis dealers sell other substances; smuggling routes which are successful can be used for hard drugs.
Illegal cannabis can be bought with stolen goods.
The Government receives no revenue. The criminals make all the profits.
Many people are prohibited from a beneficial medicine; doctors cannot prescribe cannabis.
People requiring some sort of relaxing intoxicant legally can only choose alcohol.
Prison sentences even for continual possession offences lead to family break-ups and all the problems associated with imprisonment.
People who are fined and unable to pay are locked up.
People such as Coptic Christians, Shintos, Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and Rastafarians, cannot use cannabis in Britain as part of their ritual or experiences.
No serious research can be conducted on the therapeutic uses of cannabis.
Police time is wasted, the courts full, the prisons overcrowded; over 80% of drug convictions are for cannabis.

So, when you expose your eyes to bright light, all of the rhodopsin breaks down into retinal and opsin. If you then turn out the lights and try to see in the dark, you can't. The cones need a lot of light, so they are useless, and there is no rhodopsin now so the rods are useless, too. Over the course of several minutes, however, the retinal and opsin recombine back into rhodopsin, and you can see again.
Which basically says you can see without lights just as well with lights however you will find it hard to see if you are looking at a light then without a light. The street lights do not cover the whole street therefore these 'criminals' have a much better 'clock of darkness' by just stepping out of the light.

Perhaps I should sit in pitch dark in my house waiting for the lights to go out so my eyes do not need to adjust in case something happens outside?

During the christmas period there was a intense arguement outside my home around 2am with the street lights OFF and i could see clearly who they were and what they looked like as well as what they were wearing.
You clearly need more vitamin A in your diet, eat more carrots.
What are you doing curtian twitching in the middle of the night? Maybe you need to get a life.

Many people like Littlemoor for it's VILLAGE status and proximity to Weymouth.
I'l repeat myself, please read carefully -
I
AM
IN
A
VERY
GOOD
CAREER
THAT
PAYS
WELL - YES THAT IS WELL
(above the average wage)
I too, am weymouth bred shall i repeat this to?
Including the likes of wyke regis (WHICH
IS
WHERE
I
WAS
RAISED
SO i am intiltled to this opinion)
I too know my littlemoor from my wyke.
Research - 2006 there was a rapist loose in chickerell
- 2011 there was a massive raid for drugs in wyke.
- 2007/2008 a few suicide's of all saints pupils on the all saints grounds (in wyke) due to bullying.
The point is people need to realise that crime is everywhere, there is no where that is perfect. It is unjust having an opinion of Littlemoor when it's just the same as other places in Weymouth, and branishing one place with a different paint brush while covering the whole of Littlemoor when it's just a few incosiderate people who may not even live there.

Personal experience? This says to me that you either live here or visit regularly therefore how can you have such a negative opinion of this place?
Also would you like to check your spelling and what you actually writing? This does not reflect good on your and your 'smartness'

I've been away Stench. The problem with other areas is the complete lack of community. I like the fact I can walk to the shop and the people I meet on the way will stop and have a conversation. I like the way most of my evenings in the summer are spent in neighbours gardens. There's none of that elsewhere. Its council estate camaraderie. I earn more than the majority of my peers and neighbours but it doesn't make me any better than them.
I'm not sure if being unemployed and workshy makes one any more of a bad person than being employed and workshy.
I've given up trying to prove our points.
