North Dorset District Council also proposing to withdraw free bus travel

NORTH Dorset District Council is also proposing to withdraw early morning free bus travel for pass holders.

The authority has been subsidising the cost of free travel before 9.30am in its district and claims it will cost more than £50,000 per year to continue to fund the scheme in the future.

The council’s cabinet is now proposing to withdraw the subsidy and provide £5,000 to help people who need public transport to access medical services.

Spokesman for community and regeneration Coun Val Pothecary said: “Currently anyone with a North Dorset Bus Pass is entitled to use their pass to travel anywhere at any time – for free.

“But, quite clearly, there are some people using their pass to travel to work and we have to question whether local taxpayers should be paying for this.”

They should also remove free travel after 4.00 pm as trying to get the X53 home from Poole to Weymouth is terrible due to all the oldies coming home from their free day out at 4.30. I must be the only person without grey hair on the bus and who actually hands over real cash to the driver.

I think thats fair, knock yourself out between 9.30 to 4 by all means but after that either pay or stay away.
