I hear you jmc1. Probably lots of 'working from home' too, in other words a three day weekend.

You would think we are living out a scene from Day After Tomorrow here in Dorset if the press and twitter are anything to go by!

Public Announcment: The total devastation of Dorset and the threat of the county sinking into the sea has been downgraded to 1cm of snow and some chilly winds.

There is no need to evacuate Dorset, I repeat, there is no need to evacuate.

If the school busses can't deliver the pupils whats the point of opening a school - need for repeat lessons etc.

...... and how do you solve the emergency of the school bus stuck in a country lane with schoolchildren - a likely scenario only solved by the extra capital outlay for machinery and manpower so that all school bus routes are gritted/ploughed - extra capital outlay equalls rise in council tax or cuts elsewhere -

It's Friday - let the kids get out and enjoy the snow - we are after all in global warming and the kids might never again see snow! - that reminds me we were in a never ending drought this time last year with hose-pipe bans due to global warming !

istr there were some a level exams today, hopefully those schools opened to allow them to be done. A friend lives in durham for an inch or two of snow nothing grinds to halt all the buses run and people go about their business as normal. Are we just a bit soft down here?

So firstly: teachers do NOT get a payed holiday when the school closes, we are expected to make the time up.

Secondly: the term 'pay to claim' that you are struggling to understand, refers to part time teachers who only get paid for the hours they have actually taught. They do not get paid during holidays or when the school is closed.

Instead of 'payed', why not try the English word 'paid'?
Thanks for the explanation anyway.

Actually "pay to claim" is the correct terminology used in personnel.

Do personnel also use the word 'payed'?

intherain says...

Why would they? It's a "pay to claim" form, not a "payed or paid to claim" form.

Mmm yes, I was mimicking jmc1's post in the quotes. You might also notice, that I then spelt it as 'paid' in my second point. Clearly too intellectual for some, sorry.

A lot of anger directed at teachers, I don't agree with it personally. I work in the private sector, I couldn't make it to work today due to the poor road conditions, and I took the travel advice of the police and erred on the side of caution. I managed to carry out some work from home, I got paid.

My friend is a teacher, she couldn't get to Bridport from Puddletown safely (snow, A35 closed westbound) he spent the day planning and marking, should he not be paid?

People’s opinions become jilted when it comes to teachers. Interesting reading.

Indeed, when I was going to school I often had to cycle about 10 miles through wind, rain, snow or what ever weather it was.
Grow some balls and get on with it.
Closing schools for a little bit of snow, really pathetic.

This is amusing. Something has gone wrong since 1963 when I was told to walk to school on pavements encrusted with an inch of ice, in arctic temperatures, in fog so thick I couldn't see a London bus from twenty yards and now when schools close because of a quarter inch of slush. Children should always be kept safe but there must be a more sensible demarcation. Some of these other comments also tickle my fancy. Every comment from a teacher or teacher's relative in the press or on the radio during the inevitable debates about this or that teacherwise there are ubiquitous claims that this teacher or that one, when the schools are shut, stays at home and spends their time marking or preparing. As a former teacher I don't doubt there are those who are this dutiful but in my twenty years at the chalkface I can only say that most of my colleagues with whom I was friendly found other, more relaxing, things to do on these occasional days off. It's what most normal people would do.

Laadeeda, what evidence do you have that "Royal Manor" (or "IPACA", as it has now been called for 6 months) closed the evening before? Only, I was at a parents' evening there the night before, which was still going at 7.35pm, and the staff said no decision had been made at that stage. I got a text after 6am the following morning, by which time All Saints and Budmouth were closed on the Wessex FM site. Could this possibly be an ill-informed smear?
