Langton Matravers Parish Council is leading a funding bid for urgent repairs to a leisure route in Purbeck, following complaints from the public.

The Priest’s Way from Swanage to Worth Matravers has deteriorated to the extent that deep pools make it virtually impassable in places following rain, while surface water has caused deep gullies to form.

Most of the affected areas are within the parish of Langton Matravers and the parish council, supported by, Swanage Town, Worth Matravers parish councils and National Trust, is preparing an application to the Paths for Communities Fund, run by Natural England.

The £80,000 scheme includes drainage and resurfacing work, the creation of a short new stretch of bridleway and the upgrading of two adjoining footpaths to a bridleway.

It is emphasised there is no intention to upgrade the route to allow more motor vehicles or competitive cycling, and work will be carried out sensitively to maintain the historic character of the Priest’s Way and preserve it for the future. Dorset County Council drainage experts will be consulted to ensure the work meets the required standards.

More information will be available at public consultation events in Langton Matravers Parish Office on February 25, Worth parish consultation event will be held in Worth Matravers village hall on 27 February and in Swanage.
