SNOW CHAOS: First baby is born in Swanage Hospital for almost 30 years

IF you thought you had a hectic start to the day, spare a thought for new mum Sinead Mellor.

Sinead went into labour at her Swanage home in the early hours of yesterday but was forced to turn back from Poole Hospital because the road was blocked due to cars stuck in the snow at Corfe Castle.

So her quick-thinking father-in-law made an about turn and drove Sinead and husband Martin back to Swanage Hospital, where no baby had been born for almost 30 years.

The Mellors, who arrived at the hospital’s minor injury unit before it opened, were let into the building by a startled hospital chef.

But the NHS staff did an amazing job and bouncing baby boy Kyran, weighing 6lb 9oz, was delivered around 9.50am.

Both mother and baby are said to be doing well.

Staff confirmed Kyran is the first baby to be born at Swanage Hospital for almost 30 years.

They added: “Everyone feels thrilled and privileged to have been a part of this wonderful occasion.”
