WEYMOUTH Civic Society has added its support to the calls for a rethink on the Pavilion closure.
In a letter to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, chairman of the society’s plans committee Mike Martin said: “We deplore the situation whereby Weymouth may be left without facilities such as those now provided by the Pavilion and Ocean Room, for both visitors and residents.
“It is surely unthinkable that a resort of Weymouth’s size and significance should be without a recognised venue for theatrical performances, concerts, exhibitions, events and conferences.
“We would press for a comprehensive solution to this problem with the utmost urgency.”
Closing and demolishing the Pavilion is among the council’s budget proposals to save money.
A decision will be made on the future of Weymouth Pavilion at a meeting of the full council on February 21.
