A YOUNG mother is holding a fundraiser in aid of a baby unit that helped save her life and that of her daughter.

Natalie Dewell, 22, has spent months organising a rave night in Weymouth, to raise money for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Dorset County Hospital.

She and her daughter Katelyn, 18 months, both spent time on the unit as newborns.

Natalie said: “After Katelyn was well, I wanted to do something to help them, to give something back for how they have helped me.

“I got talking to some friends, and it is incredible how many people have experienced their care.”

Natalie suffered pre-eclampsia when pregnant, a condition which raises the blood pressure and can cause complications in the pregnancy.

She said: “I only went in for observation, and the next thing I knew I was having an emergency caesarean.

“Katelyn was born more than three weeks early, weighing 3lb 4oz, and spent 24 days in the unit.

“She’s absolutely fine now, and has just started walking and talking.”

Natalie added: “My mum’s pregnancy was even more complicated – I was an ectopic baby and was born at 28 weeks weighing just over 1lb.

“The nurses and all the staff there are fantastic, and I just wanted to do something to say thank you.”

The rave night will take place at Club Vision tonight from 10pm.

Entrance costs £3 and Dorset businesses Kandi Clubwear and Tiny Treasure have made and donated key rings and badges to be sold on the night in aid of the unit.

Natalie said: “I wanted to do something that would appeal to a lot of people and rave nights are something I really enjoyed before I was pregnant.

“We’ve got loads of DJs from Dorset and Somerset, who are all donating their time for free, and will be playing everything from hard trance to acid techno.

“People have been really generous in donating their time and skills, so everything that is raised will go directly to the unit.”
