Weymouth and Portland residents' anger over rubbish service

RUBBISH collection is causing a stink among residents with some having to wait a month to have their bins emptied.

All of Weymouth and Portland has had its refuse service disrupted after one day of the snow two weeks ago.

Disgusted residents say it is not good enough and some areas, including Westham, will have to wait four weeks between collections.

Kathleen Kelly and Franchesca Hills, of Holland Road, said it is disgusting.

Miss Kelly said: “There will be rats and mice soon. It’s awful.

“We didn’t even have that much snow but the bins haven’t been emptied in about a month.”

Linda Newton, of Emmadale Road, said the council needs to sort itself out.

She said: “My bin is now too heavy for me to move.

“There was only one day of snow so you would think they could catch up by now.

“The council has said they will take black bin bags but the seagulls and other animals will get in.

“It’s just not good enough, they need to sort themselves out.”

Speaking at a Weymouth and Portland Borough Council meeting, Melbury Road resident John Joycey raised concerns about rubbish collection.

He said it was disgusting the bins would not be emptied in a month.

Mr Joycey said after the meeting: “I feel this is totally unacceptable.

“The bins will start to smell and it will encourage rats, as well as seagulls tearing open the bags.

“I didn’t think the snow we had was that bad but if the council lorries couldn’t come out for any reason they should come back the next day rather than leaving it for so long.”

A spokesman for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council said all collection routes across the borough have been affected.

Robert Hallett, of Park Court, Littlemoor, said his usual fortnightly collection was disrupted with no warning.

He said that refuse lorries were only sent out after he called to complain after none of the bins on his road were emptied on the usual day on Wednesday.

Mr Hallett said: “I called the council to ask what had happened but they said the bins in my area were not due for collection for another week.

“Our last collection was two weeks ago and everyone living on the road knew it was due that day.

“In the end they came later in the afternoon but we were going to have to wait three weeks.

“I don’t know why the council thought the date had changed, but what I do know is that my neighbours and I can read a calendar, and know how long two weeks are.

“If they need to change the collection dates the council should let us know, not just wait until we figure it out when the rats are nibbling at our doorsteps.”

Councillor Gill Taylor, spokesman for environment and sustainability at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, apologised to residents and asked them to be patient.

She said: “People who did not have their waste and recycling collected on Friday, January 18, due to the adverse weather conditions should hold on to their waste until their next scheduled collection date.

“The council will pick up any extra waste left beside green bins during these collections.

“Brown bins will be emptied on the next scheduled collection date.

“We ask residents to ensure bins and waste is taken back inside or off the pavement until their next collection date to minimise obstructions to highways. Unfortunately rescheduling collections would impact on a far larger number of households in the borough.”

I walked up Shirecroft Rd on Friday, the crews were going round at the time collecting a month's worth of recycling and green bins, a resident had put out a large number of black bags which had presumably been attacked by seagulls. Stinking rubbish including nappies and other sanitary waste was strewn everywhere. A totally disgusting mess.

We were told that the collections 2 weeks ago had been suspended because of the snow, and initially were informed that it would be collected on Monday. The announcement was then changed to say that there would be no collection and we'd have to wait for the next scheduled collection in a fortnight. Presumably the crews refused to do overtime?

Have to say we never have a problem with WDDC collections. Over xmas they have a special timetable for collections which works well, w&p bc need more of 'can do' attitude if you ask me.

Try producing less waste. Not rocket science.

We have already drastically reduced our waste as the landfill collection is now only once a fortnight. However a household with young children inevitably produces more waste, and postponing the collection for a further fortnight and saying "we'll accept black bags" is just not acceptable.

I only put my wheelie bin out about 2 or 3 times a year. How can a house make so much rubbish in such a short time?

6 wheelie bins plus 13+ bags of rubbish. Something is the matter with that household!

Headline 'Weynmouth' - is this somewhere that we should know about or aren't the Echo 'journalists' able to spell the name of the town where their local offices are?

Weymouth Council are useless. We had far more snow in Dorchester and our collections weren't affected at all. How they've got so far behind when there was only one working day with snow is ridiculous.

The council are regularly not emptying my wheelie bin even though it is put out on the correct day and place. I am forever having to phone and complain about this issue yet they never learn. It is extremely tiresome and time consuming having to call them nearly every week, sometimes several times just to get my bin emptied. The service is appalling and there is no getting through to them!

this is a ridiculous story appearing one day after the council caught up with the collections. There was only one collection affected, and that was the one on the day we had the most snow. It was just unfortunate that it was the rubbish collecting day and not just the brown bin day. That being said as a family with 2 bins because we have young children, I still managed to get all my rubbish in the bins apart from one bag. People really do need to start looking at how much rubbish they throw away. I had far more recycling than rubbish and true to form the wonderful recycling crews from W&PBC took the whole lot. I like the chance to knock our council most of the time, but this time it really is unfair.

Dont worry the service will be run by the Dorset Waste Partnership soon so one less thing for W & P to worry about every day They will only have to be involved in overall stratagy

Refuse lorry goes along the seafront everyday with 3 men inside stopping at every waste bin and look to see if it needs emptying, some times one of the workers will get out of the cab and run to the bins look inside and move on to the next without it being emptied with the cart following( in the winter) how many visitors do they think we have.Twice a week is enough what a waste of money.Get out of our cab and pick up rubbish on the beach!
