Dog rescued after falling off cliff

A DOG which plunged off a cliff in Weymouth was safely recovered by coastguards.

Pepsi the jack russell tumbled over the edge at Bincleaves while out for a walk near the coast with its owner, sparking a frantic search.

Despite the fall, the owner could still hear Pepsi barking and scrambling around but could not get to her. They tried to coax the dog to safety without success.

A Portland Coastguard spokesman said although there is steep drop to the cliff, there was sufficient undergrowth to catch the dog’s fall, although it could not free itself. The dog fell about 200 yards along from the coastguard station.

After about three hours, the dog owner officially raised the alarm with coastguards.

Wyke Coastguard Rescue Officers were called in who met with workers at the bottom of the cliff at the Bincleaves arm of Portland Harbour and managed to get to the pet.

Pepsi was safely recovered and reunited with her grateful owner on Thursday.

Yet another irresponsible Dog owner. If these Stupid People were made to Pay for the Rescue Service's, or prosecuted, I wonder just how many Dogs would be left of leash's, (which I thought was against a by-law in Weymouth & Portland) to go over cliffs?

The area of this incident is the Green were the Coast Guard lookout is. The cliff face has a six foot chain link fence along its entire length. To the unaware the fence has small holes which will allow as in this case small dogs to get through. So, the owner of the dog believes the area to be safe and allow the dog to run free which is allowed.

As a dog owner myself I do believe that some dog owners who allow their animals to run free near cliff edges and then need to be rescued should pay. There is no bye-law covering dogs near cliff faces.

Some owners and non dog owners are blissfully on aware of the law, bye-laws and Dog Control Orders covering dogs. As one council official find out to her cost. I was ordered to put my dog on the lead. When the Dog Control Order stated the area designated allowed dogs to run free if not annoying other people.

My 2 1/2 year old Jack Russell named Pepsi went missing January 2, 2013. A Police Report has been filed in Elk Grove CA. She is microchipped, and was lost with her red collar and tags. Does anyone have a picture or have more details on this JRT that fell off a cliff? We are heartbroken and desparately searching for our Pepsi. She has been on Good Day Sacramento recently also.
