DORSET County Council leader Angus Campbell has announced he is to stand down from the role.

The councillor, who has led the authority for seven years, will not be seeking re-election when the county goes to the polls in May.

He says he feels new ideas are needed at the top and it is time for him to look for fresh challenges.

Coun Campbell told the Dorset Echo: “I do think there is a limit for how long anyone should stay in a position like this.

“We need new people in the cabinet and in leadership positions with fresh ideas.

“As with any business things work more healthily if you keep things moving on.”

He said that he was particularly pleased to have led the council when it hosted the Olympic sailing events last year.

Coun Campbell, who announced his decision at a meeting of full council today, added that one regret he had was not seeing the council through the current austerity measures it is facing as cuts from central government look set to continue for some years to come.

He said: “You always like to finish a job you have started but at the same time I think it is the right time.”

Good thinking Angus -- I agree with what you say about there being a time limit, self imposed or otherwise. I also think that it applies to many other organisations as well.

Angus has been great for Dorset. Compare his lEadership against the soap operas of the crackpot boroughS of Poole and Bournemouth! Angus would have been a great police commissioner. Good luck to you Angus in the future

I have no views one way or the other about Angus Campbell, but I hope he is not going to be given a massive, disproportionate payoff as a retirement present. In this time, where it seems we may be heading for a triple dip recession - if today's headlines are to be believed - it would be an insult to the public that he has served were he to be given a 6 figure payoff, along with his no doubt fully index linked pension. Good luck on your retirement from the council, but don't get greedy Angus, or you may very well lose the goodwill of the people that you have gained over the years.

I doubt very much he'll be receiving any "pay-out"as he's an elected member, not a paid employee.

Yes, he'll will have received payments by way of allowances commensurate with his standing and duties, but these do not constitute a salaried payment.
