Mother dies after apparently falling down stairs of Weymouth home

A MOTHER died after apparently falling down the stairs in her Weymouth home, an inquest has been told.

Deborah Leigh McLaren, 41, was pronounced dead at hospital in Southampton on August 24 last year, more than two weeks after she suffered injuries to her head, ribs and spine.

Her husband Alistair McLaren told the inquest at County Hall in Dorchester that he had been out for lunch on August 7, 2012, and returned to their home in Churchward Avenue in Preston to find his wife lying at the foot of the stairs.

Mr McLaren added: “My immediate thought was she had fallen down the stairs due to the position she was in.”

He contacted an ambulance and Mrs McLaren was taken to Dorset County Hospital but was later transferred to Southampton after a scan revealed she had suffered a brain haemorrhage.

After undergoing two operations Mrs McLaren failed to recover and, following consultation with Mr McLaren, doctors decided to focus on making her as comfortable as possible.

Coroner for Dorset Sheriff Payne recorded a verdict of accidental death.

He said: “All the circumstances seem to point to her going down the stairs.”
