Fire service in line for information project accolade

DORSET FIRE and Rescue Service is among companies shortlisted for an information security project award.

Working in collaboration with other fire services across the South West, it has now been shortlisted for the European Information Security Project of the year award sponsored by SC Magazine.

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said: “Raising the service’s policies, procedures, systems, governance and IT infrastructure up to the stringent requirements of UK Her Majesty’s Government standards would not have been possible without adopting a collaborative approach.

“This has enabled considerable savings to be made in collaborative procurements and the development of common policies.”

The spokesman added that the service was now seen by its peers as ‘leaders in information assurance within the fire service sector and have paved the way for other services to follow’.

Vikki Shearing, head of information management at Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The programme has provided us with a comprehensive set of tools and policies to ensure that all our sensitive information is appropriately safeguarded and staff are aware of their responsibilities for managing information.

“This, in turn will allow us to share information with our partners.

“The increased level of security, provided through this South West collaboration project, will improve the Fire Service’s operational response capabilities.”

The winner is due to be announced on April 23.
