Weymouth drug dealer spared prison for ‘behaving himself’

A MAN who admitted dealing drugs has been given a suspended sentence after managing to keep out of trouble.

Anthony Short, 24, admitted charges of possessing heroin with intent to supply, being concerned in the supply of heroin and possession of cannabis in December last year.

He had been caught with a small amount of cannabis and five wraps of heroin on November 23.

Short, of Victoria Avenue, Weymouth, had his sentence deferred as Judge Roger Jarvis said he had learned the defendant was taking steps to address his drug taking and offending behaviour.

Short returned to Dorchester Crown Court three months later and his barrister Robin Leach confirmed he had not been in any further trouble and was continuing to engage with the Probation Service.

Judge Jarvis said: “I’m relieved to see that overall you have kept up that effort that you had earlier made.”

Short was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for one year and ordered to pay costs of £150.

By 'Behaving himself' - Does that mean that he is declaring his income to DWP and paying tax on his profits?

What "War on drugs"?

Lets hope the parents of somebody who dies from a heroin overdose appreciate Mr Shorts outstanding contribution to the community. The reason we have scum walking our streets has NOTHING to do with the Police, but EVERYTHING to do with our legal system and the judges that operate it.

Totally agree niceonecyril. The government, lawmakers and sentencing judges need to get back in the driving seat and make the punishments fit the crime.

The police are powerless, both in deterrence in numbers and deterrence by punishment all the time that these judges are handing out pitiful sentences like this.

You steal a pint of milk from asda to feed your family, you 'can' go to prison for 5 years or more, notice the word 'CAN'. You peddle a killer substance which is outlawed and is known to cause death, you get a suspended sentence and a little fine.

The punishments that these judges sometimes impose for drug dealers, and there is no doubt that this scumbag was dealing and supplying to other people, are ludicrous and you cannot help feel for the police officers involved, because they have targeted much valuable time arresting this 'human' being, but have little to show for their efforts. Who would want to be a policeman/woman today with the risk of death or injury, and the culprit getting a petty penalty.
