TRIBUTES were paid to two long-serving members of the Dorset Fire Authority as they bowed out of their roles.

Councillor Geoff Brierley and Councillor David Fox were attending their last fire authority meeting before stepping down after nearly 50 years between them as members.

Authority chairman Rebecca Knox, members and chief fire officer Darran Gunter praised them for their continued support and input over the years.

Coun Knox said of Coun Fox: “After 37 years as a councillor and member of the Dorset Fire Authority, and having previously held the chairman and deputy chairman’s role plus representing the Dorset Fire Authority both here in the county and at a national level, I think it is fair to say that really is a remarkable achievement.”

Mr Gunter added: “I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to you for all of your words of wisdom and support, that you have given to me over the last 12 years, and in particular the last seven years as chief fire officer.”

Coun Brierley also received recognition for his work for the authority since becoming a county councillor in 2001.

Coun Knox said: “You have steered us through some very difficult times both as a county councillor and in representing your area as a local councillor – my neighbour in West Dorset – and we will all miss you terribly.

“Thank you so much for all that you have done to support the work of the Dorset Fire Authority and Dorset Fire and Rescue Service.”

Mr Gunter added his thanks: “I can always rely on Geoff to talk straight and to bring us back to reality in such matters as the retained duty system for example.

“Thanks for all your support and wisdom over the past 12 years.”

Both members were presented with engraved plaques to commemorate their respective work for and on behalf of the Authority.
