Police warn motorists to stop using illegal short-cut

DO THE RIGHT THING: PCSO Jason Newall at the junction at Fortuneswell on Portland where people are illegally turning left
POLICE are warning motorists on Portland not to take an illegal short-cut that could risk lives.
The Portland Safer Neighbourhood Team is urging drivers to stop travelling the wrong way down a one-way street in Fortuneswell.
They claim motorists are taking an illegal left turn at the junction of Spring Gardens and Fortuneswell to cut up through Ventnor Road towards the Verne Prison.
The warning comes after many complaints to Dorset Police from residents, local businesses and the local school crossing patrol officer, who fear that it could risk lives.
PCSO for Fortuneswell Jason Newall said: “We are constantly receiving complaints about drivers taking the illegal route as a short-cut.
“Pedestrians are not expecting cars to be driving in that direction and children from nearby schools cross the road there.
“It is not worth taking a short-cut when lives are at risk or an accident could happen. It is breaking the law and we are urging motorists to use the correct route.”
Drivers who choose to take the route could receive a £30 fine for contravening a local traffic order.
Luke Hendy, of local business Portland Pride, said: “I’m a driver and I would never do that.
“It could cause an accident because people aren’t expecting to see a car drive in that direction.
“It is not fair on the local businesses, the children crossing the road or the pedestrians.”
He added: “It doesn’t take much longer to drive the correct way around, so it makes no sense.”
Resident Tracy McCarthy, who lives on Fortuneswell, said: “I live right on the corner where these drivers are making the illegal turn.
“Cars, mopeds and vans all zoom around the corner and up along the short-cut.
“It isn’t right because the children cross nearby and might not check to see if a car is coming that from that way.”

The fact it has been happening for years isn't an excuse.

So shoot me.. providing the driver checks that there are no children/pedestrians coming, I see no problem.
I also do it myself regularly - admittedly, usually at 11 o clock at night when nobody is about.
Oh and before anyone dives in there.. this does not automatically I also like to partake in driving the wrong way down a motorway, breaking the speed limit or driving dangerously. Wind yer neck in y'all :o)
What I do have an issue with is cyclists that come hairing down ventnor road in the middle of the road while I'm coming the other way.. No doubt it I wallop one of them in my car, I'll end up being liable - What a brilliant world we live in.

Ah yes, I do this all the time. I also stop purposely back from the junction to allow people to actually perform the maneuver. When you break the law you consider it to be no problem (your words). Yet should a cyclist do the same you then have an issue with it. Correct ?
Fact is you are both wrong but like so many road users it is only wrong when someone else does it.
What a brilliant world we live in indeed.

The pelican crossing opposite the old hospital, traffic headed up Dorchester road. Nobody actually bothers to stop for pedestrians, and I've seen lots of near misses where drivers come haring round the corner, chatting on a phone, putting on makeup etc.
Stand a cooper on the island for. Day and round up fifty or so motorists for dangerous driving. Then we might be impressed.

Cars have been doing this for decades and has there ever been an accident?
Also the words used by the PSCO is "Constantly receiving". If that is the case then why hasn't something been done sooner, only now it has become a problem!
