A couple are to appear in court today (May 2) charged with defrauding a 100-year-old family member out of £26,000.

Janice and Leslie Olaff have been charged with abuse of a position of trust.

Mrs Olaff was victim Ernest Michel’s niece and the pair had power of attorney over him.

They are said to have written cheques and used Mr Michel’s debit cards over a six-year period. Mr Michel lives in Brighton.

Mrs Olaff, 65, has been charged with nine offences of abuse of position of trust. It is alleged that she wrote cheques for herself and her 70-year-old husband between February 2006 and June 2010.

The amount in these cheques ranged from £250 to £5,000. It is also alleged that she arranged a bank transfer of £6,000 in June 2010.

Mr Olaff is accused of four similar counts. It is alleged that he accepted and cashed cheques in 2007. He is also alleged to have used a debit card belonging to Mr Michel for various goods and services totalling more than £6,000 between 2007 and 2012.

The Olaffs, from Stanmore, Middlesex, are on bail.
