FOLK music events in Dorchester will form part of the annual celebrations of Thomas Hardy’s birthday.

The Thomas Hardy Society has organised a number of events to mark the anniversary of the novelist and poet’s birthday including a concert at the Dorset County Museum on Saturday, June 1.

The event starts at 7.30pm and will feature music from Tim Laycock and The Mellstock Band.

On Friday, June 7 there will also be a Barn Dance at the Corn Exchange from 7.30pm featuring local Dorset band Black Sheep.

Secretary of the Thomas Hardy Society, Mike Nixon, said: “We are celebrating the music that he loved.”

Other events to mark the occasion include the annual birthday lecture at Dorchester’s County Hall on Saturday, June 1. This year’s lecture will be given by Dr Alan Chedzoy, chairman of the William Barnes Society.

On Sunday, June 1 there will be a walk to St Michael’s Church in Stinsford, where Hardy was buried, before taking in refreshments at Kingston Maurward and finishing at the writer’s former home at Max Gate.
