TALENTED pupils took part in a music festival that celebrates Portland.

Hundreds of students sang a selection of songs as part of the 12th Portland Schools Music Festival at the Weymouth Pavilion.

Youngsters came from St George’s Primary School and the four schools that make up the Isle of Portland Aldridge Community Academy (IPACA). The carnival-themed festival attracted hundreds of teachers, staff and residents to the venue.

Grove campus headteacher Jane Hurdiss said pupils rehearsed the production in the morning and then took to the stage in the afternoon.

She added: “It is a fantastic opportunity for all Portland pupils to get together and have fun.

“It was really nice for parents to see their children singing.”

The event was organised by the Portland Schools Music Association, which consists of music coordinators from each school on Portland.

It included performances from the Royal Manor Jazz Band and singing group.

Ms Hurdiss said the event this year was extra special due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of Weymouth Pavilion.

“The Pavilion might be closed this time next year, so this year’s festival means a lot to us.

“We have been running the event for many years here and I don’t know where we will hold it should the worst happen.”

Barbara Toms travelled from Poole to support her nine-year-old grandson Oliver Williams in the festival.

She said: “I think it is great for family members to be able to come and watch the youngsters sing with each other.

“It was a lovely day and I’m very proud of Oliver.”

IPACA pupil Jacob, six, said: “It has been really fun. I loved singing with my friends.”
