MEMORIES of Holgate Windmill are being sought to put the wind in the sails of an oral history project.

Its story is well documented from 1769 to 1933, when it closed, but there is then a huge gap until Holgate Windmill Preservation Society started in 2001.

This year the society is aiming to piece together the missing history from local accounts.

A grant from the historic buildings charity Feoffees, of St. Michael’s of Spurriergate, has paid for oral history recording equipment to use on site.

Society spokeswoman Ulla Wiberg said: “Every memory is precious, whether a hundred words or just a single sentence.

“All pieced together they will enable us to recreate the missing years and to establish an archive for the future.”
