PARTIALLY sighted Mark Harrison from Winterbourne Abbas says he will be ‘grinning for days’ after a supercar experience.

Mark got behind the wheel of a Lamborghini Gallardo at an event for blind and partially blind people to enjoy a day driving seriously fast cars.

The day was organised by iCAN Experiences, a company providing activities for disabilities, in partnership with driving experience provider U Drive Cars, at a former RAF base in Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire.

A total of 15 blind and partially sighted people enjoyed the freedom of the track, which included fast straights and hair-pin bends, in cars such as a Ferrari 360 and an Aston Martin DB9 with top speeds of up to 192mph.

For safety reasons they were accompanied by an instructor who had an engine cut-off switch and separate brake pedal.

Founder of iCAN experiences Paul Nicol explained the thinking behind the day.

He said: “I’m blind myself, but I used to be able to drive and sometimes I miss being behind the wheel.

“So I wondered if we could give blind and partially sighted people the chance to get behind the wheel of a supercar.”

Mr Nicol contacted Paul Davis of U Drive Cars and the two of them arranged the event.

After enjoying the thrill of his supercar experience, Mark said: “I’ve had such a great time.

“The instructor was fantastic and everyone was so helpful. It’s such an incredible experience driving an amazing car like this – if I can drive a Lamborghini, I know being blind won’t hold me back. I’ll be grinning for days!”

Mr Nicol said he was delighted with how the event had gone and hoped to run another similar event in the future.

He said: “The day was incredibly successful, everyone had a brilliant day.

“I am so pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to blind and partially sighted people, we will definitely be doing it again.”
