WINDSURFING stars Nick Dempsey and Bryony Shaw got off to a storming start at the RS:X European Championships in Brest, France.

Weymouth’s Olympic silver medallist Dempsey posted four race wins and two second places in the first two days of the event on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The 32-year-old is looking to add European Championship gold to the world title he won in Brazil back in March, when he became the first man ever to win the RS:X world crown twice.

Shaw also claimed the fleet leader’s yellow jersey after the opening races, which saw good winds but lashing rain and was described by some competitors as being just like Weymouth.

Meanwhile, in Denmark, British Sailing Team crews are gunning for glory at the 49er and 49erFX skiff European Champ-ionships in Aarhus.

Weymouth’s Charlotte Dobson, winner of two 49erFX circuit medals with different crews so far this year, has teamed up with Sophie Ainsworth for the event while Poole’s Kate Macgregor is racing with Mary Rook. For both regattas, the medal deciders will be held on Sunday.
