A WOODLAND walk has been named in memory of a Weymouth schoolgirl who died after a brave battle with cancer.

Nine-year-old Aimee Charlotte Nicholson passed away peacefully at home in the loving care of her mum Alex and dad Kevin.

The youngster was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in February 2010 and her parents were told in April this year that she had just weeks to live.

Staff and youngsters at St John’s Primary School, which Aimee attended when she felt well enough, paid tribute to the ‘well-loved’ pupil by naming a woodland walk in her memory.

Headteacher Diana Mason said Aimee was a ‘happy, bright and very able’ pupil who would be remembered at the school by Aimee’s Walk.

She added: “Aimee was a very well loved member of our school. “She joined our nursery when she was three and entered the reception class as a happy, bright, very able little girl. “She was full of fun and life and had a good sense of humour.”

Aimee was set to have a bone marrow transplant in January but this was postponed when doctors said she needed further chemotherapy.

The school united to take part in a service held at the same time as Aimee’s funeral.

The brave youngster was remembered through the colours of flowers and thoughts written by the children and staff.

They also had a special ‘bring a teddy’ picnic to remember Aimee, whose favourite animal was a panda. Mrs Mason added: “Aimee had several absences but still came in to school to meet with her friends and spend time with her class, even if it was just for an hour or so. “Sadly she never made it into school in year four as the disease took further hold of her young life. “Aimee and her family were always in our prayers.”
