Islanders enjoy fun in the sun at Easton Gardens
The fete was organised by the Easton Community Group, which was praised by Portland mayor Les Ames for its efforts. Children had a ton of fun as they were decorated in glitter and masks.
Violeta and Marnie Gonzalez, aged seven and nine, along with Jacob Leggins, aged eight, laughed as they brushed on sparkles.
Elsewhere little Amber Warwick, aged four, enjoyed a ride in a fire engine on the carousel.
Portland mayor Les Ames said he loved seeing the children having fun. He added: “Events like this bring the whole community together. It’s a pleasure to mix and talk to people.”
“This event was created by generous volunteers. There are many people who spend their lives working for the benefit of others and very seldom are recognised. People sit up all night preparing for events like this.”
He called Easton Community Group treasurer June Morley a ‘very dedicated woman’ and said she deserves the community’s support.
He added: “Few people realise how hard she works and what it means to her. I will support her on every occasion that I can.”
The group has been running for 12 years in September and is made up of volunteers who work hard to make the gardens as nice as possible for residents and visitors.
Councillor Margaret Leicester said: “It was a lovely day – fortunately the weather was nice and it was absolutely packed.
“There were children having fun and elderly people meeting up with friends and listening to music – it really was nice. June really does make a great effort.
"Of course she has lots of people helping but she’s the driving force behind this event.”
