Roundabout on major route in a 'bad way' - council highway chiefs

A ROUNDABOUT on a major route undergoing an extensive repair project is in a 'bad way' and needs fixing, council chiefs insist.
The Bakers Arms roundabout on the A35 between Wareham and Poole is the focus of major roadworks over nine weeks that will culminate in a complete closure over a weekend in October.
The timing of the works has come in for criticism.
But Dorset County Council says the work, which started on Monday, has to be done.
DCC environment spokesman Hilary Cox said: “The roundabout is in a bad way and with winter approaching we have looked at the traffic that regularly uses the roundabout and planned the work at a time when it will cause the least disruption, but still give us the benefit of full daylight and hopefully reasonable weather to get the work done in one weekend.
“It is essential work that is needed to make sure this major route can meet the demands required by road users.”
The project includes
- Replacement of the roads foundation and resurfacing
- Widening the A35 and A351 approaches to help increase capacity and traffic flow
- Providing a foot/cycleway across the south and west of the roundabout from the A351 to Lytchett Minster (B3067)
- Improving the drainage on the roundabout
- New road markings
It is part of a larger project to provide safe routes for cyclists and walkers along the length of the A351. This part of the project has been timed so that they can be completed before the structural maintenance on the roundabout begins.
DCC management engineer Andrew Bradley said motorists would not be affected a great deal during the first four or five weeks of the project.
The roundabout will be closed completely from Friday, October 4 to Monday, October 7 to allow for construction of the carriageway and major structural resurfacing. A signed diversion will be in operation.
