WEYMOUTH CARNIVAL:Battle it out on the beach
DON’T panic! Teams taking part in a special Weymouth Carnival tug-of-war battle will not have to pull a string of sausages.
Butcher Dennis Spurr, who has thrown his weight behind the competition, will ensure there’s a rope provided.
He’s urging teams to get involved in the contest, one of a number of fun games and competitions taking part on the big day, Wednesday, August 21. There’s also plenty for youngsters to get involved in too.
It’s all happening in the beach fun zone on the sands towards the Pavilion end.
Mr Spurr, from the Fantastic Sausage Factory, is sponsoring the tug-of-war which will be held at 11am.
Teams of up to eight with a bit of muscle are required. To enter they must download an entry form from the carnival website weymouthcarnival.co.uk and return it to Mr Spurr’s shop in St Mary Street or to the address provided on the website.
The beach fun zone is a new idea put together by the Weymouth Carnival and Events Club.
Mr Spurr said: “I really admire the people who are volunteering to organise this year’s carnival. They’re not in it for the money, they’re just working really hard to make this wonderful event work. I wanted to do my bit and help them.”
He added: “I’ll be handing a trophy to the winning tug-of-war team and prizes for those in the best fancy dress.
“Come on down if you think you’re hard enough and have some good old fashioned fun.”
As well as tug-of-war, there will be sports going all day from 11am for young people to get involved in including aqua Zumba, kwick cricket, volleyball, Zumba, football and more.
There will also be children’s races like egg & spoon, three-legged and wheelbarrow.
Youngsters will have the opportunity to practice their modelling skills in a sandcastle competition from noon.
There will be prizes for the kings of the castle.
Later, at 5pm around the Esplanade there will be a waiters and waitresses race, barrel rolling and children’s fun run. Download a form from the carnival website weymouthcarnival.co.uk to enter these races.
