Four men, 10,000 miles and all in a banger
AN INTREPID group of friends from Dorchester have completed a gruelling charity rally that took them 10,000 miles from home.
Tom Thornycroft, Chris King, Paul Reis and Lee Goddard had little idea of what they were in for when they signed up for the 2013 Mongol Rally.
Nearly a month after setting off from the county town they completed their epic voyage in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia, having driven the entire journey in two little 1.1 litre Suzuki Alto’s.
They finished a respectable 13th out of around 300 entries and are still hoping to raise more funds for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and Spinal Research.
After arriving at their destination their cars were also donated to a Mongolian charity.
Tom said: “There was a real tear in the eye when we had to give those little cars up.
"What they had been through most 4x4’s would have struggled with and they just kept going.
"Huge potholes, extreme temperatures, rutted paths and muddy hill climbs provided far bigger problems for the drivers than for the cars.”
Over their 25-day journey the two cars only suffered two slow punctures and three broken springs, which were all easily repaired.
Tom added: “It was an incredible journey. We were camping for most of the trip, which was both essential and spectacular in Mongolia itself.
“We would like to say a huge thank you to Blacks, who provided all our camping equipment, which meant that whatever the weather threw at us, from freezing nights to the edge of tropical storms, we were well rested and well fed.”
The team averaged between ten and fourteen hours a day at the wheel.
Despite a 27-hour stay in a Mongolian customs pen, a navigational error that left them digging their vehicles out of a ravine for six hours and a virus that swept through the team, they still made it within their four week deadline.
The foursome want to thank all those who sponsored them for the challenge and are still fundraising for their chosen causes.
