Barefoot Rik to run for 24 hours
A MEMBER of a Dorchester band is casting off his shoes for a charity running challenge with a difference.
Rik Vanhoutteghem is preparing to run for 24 hours in bare feet to raise funds for the Durnovaria Silver Band’s new home.
The band is currently bidding to raise around £70,000 to purchase the former Fordington Methodist Church and convert it into the Durnovaria Community Hall to give the band a permanent home and also offer the facility for use by other community groups.
Rik, who joined the Durnovaria Silver Band three years ago to fulfil a long held ambition to play a brass instrument, said he was determined to do his bit for the cause and wanted to think of something different to create interest and attract maximum sponsorship.
The 52-year-old veterinary surgeon said: “I came away from a committee meeting thinking ‘what can I do to generate some funds’ and I thought ‘it’s got to be something different’.
“I was out running one morning and suddenly it came to me.
“I’m a bit into barefoot running and I thought doing it for 24 hours was a bit quirky, it’s not something you see people doing every day and that will get people’s interest.”
Rik said he knew someone who had done it for their 65th birthday so he was confident it could be done.
However, he added: “It is a bit of a challenge, I don’t know what I’m going to encounter along the way in terms of fatigue.”
Rik will be start running at 3pm on Saturday, August 31 at the grass track at the Thomas Hardye School after headteacher Mike Foley kindly granted permission to use the facility.
All being well he will run through the night and at about 2pm on Sunday, September 1 he will set off through the town before ending up at the Dorchester Borough Gardens, where the Durnovaria Silver Band will be playing.
Rik said the challenge will be a mental challenge as well as a physical one and he will have a support team with him overnight as well as other runners joining him for various stints.
Rik is hoping to raise around £5,000 towards the Durnovaria Community Hall through the challenge.
