Reckless speedboat driving prompts safety warning
10:00am Friday 23rd August 2013 in News
COASTGUARDS have put out a warning after a speedboat came dangerously close to swimmers on a Dorset beach.
An emergency call was made when the speedboat was seen being driven recklessly in Ringstead Bay near Weymouth, pictured right.
At the time, the water was busy with bathers enjoying the fine weather, Portland Coastguard was alerted to the danger just after 4pm on Tuesday (20) but the boat had left the area by the time coastguards arrived.
A coastguard spokesman said: "We would ask motorboat users to avoid coming too close to the shore during good weather as the waters could be busy with swimmers enjoying a cooling dip."
The National Trust manages land at Ringstead Bay. A spokeswoman echoed the coastguard warning.
She said: “Anything that upsets the quiet and safety of Ringstead Bay is of concern to us.
“We would be concerned about the safety of people swimming there.”
