A GROUP of friends who have battled cancer will be taking the plunge for charity.

Annemarie Male and Cindy Short, of Weymouth, have both overcome breast cancer and wanted to raise money and awareness of the disease.

Together with their friends Bryony Gould, Sam Galley, Marie Robinson and Della Spurgin, they will be taking on a 10,000-foot skydive to raise funds for the breast cancer care team at Dorset County Hospital and Joseph Weld Hospice.

The women are all members of the The Baldies charity, which was started by Annemarie in 2010 and raised £33,000 for Dorset County Hospital.

Cindy said: “I’ve never done anything like this before and I decided to do it to rope Annemarie in because she’s petrified of heights and we all shaved our heads for her.

“We are all a bit worried but we are just going to go for it.

“Annemarie had been diagnosed with breast cancer and she started The Baldies to raise funds towards the mammography scanner appeal at Dorset County Hospital.

“In March this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and as an original Baldie decided that we should do something to raise money towards cancer care in our community.

“I’ve finished my treatment and just have to go back yearly for check-ups.”

She added: “I wanted to give something back to the breast care team – they were fantastic.

“Everyone has had friends or loved ones who have been in Joseph Weld so we wanted to support them as well.

“I already would like to give my thanks to South Coast Catering, First Fit Windows, Albion Stone and Ian Burden’s butchers who are helping with funds to sponsor the jumps.

“If any businesses would like to help us with raffle prizes we would be very grateful.”

On August 24 the six women will be completing a tandem skydive at Old Sarum Airfield, Salisbury.

  •  THE group will be holding a number of fundraising events this month.

On Sunday there will be a Crab Day at Weymouth Angling Club from 2pm to 5pm.

It will be a fun day for families, when children and adults can compete to catch crabs from the harbour with a number of prizes up for grabs.

Raffle tickets will be on sale and the raffle will be held at the end of the day.

There will also be a quiz starting at 6pm.

On Saturday, August 31, there will be a quiz and raffle night at the Spa Hotel starting at 8pm.

Teams of six or less are welcome to enter.
