Guerilla group takes stand against dog mess
A GUERILLA group determined to clean up Portland have staged a demonstration against dog mess.
PLOP, Portland Locals Opposing Poo, secretly hung dozens of brightly coloured dog mess bags filled with sand on a bush in Victoria Gardens, Portland last night.
The move was in protest to a minority of dog owners who have been leaving dog mess in bags hanging around the area.
The idea was to create a light-hearted surprise spectacle that wouldn’t preach at people but would make people think, according to the group.
The sand-filled bags will be taken down on Sunday.
PLOP regularly do surveys and they say that residents have told them over the summer holidays the situation had become worse.
Georgina Bacon from the group said: “We try to do things with good humour – people don’t want to be preached at, but we need to do things that grab people’s attention.”
The group are affiliated with the Friends of Victoria Garden and say they aren’t anti-dogs and in fact lots of group members have canine friends.
However, they want to make those irresponsible dog owners, who are bagging their pooch’s mess and lobbing it or just leaving it, to stop and think.
Mrs Bacon said: “It’s a minority but unfortunately the minority are having a high impact on the community.”
She added: “It’s just disgusting. We are hoping to do it in a good humoured way, to make people think about what they are doing.”
Portland had a great community spirit and that was why initiatives like PLOP worked well, Mrs Bacon said.
She added that as a parent, she found the situation ‘really shocking.’ PLOP is urging people to report dog fouling to Dorset County Council, people can go online and complete a short form to alert the authorities to the problem.
