Weymouth Pavilion opens doors for weekend showcase
11:55am Friday 30th August 2013 in News
THE community is being invited to a free arts showcase at the new-look Weymouth Pavilion this weekend.
New operator Phil Say is throwing open the doors of the Pavilion and giving people the chance to see the facilities and what the venue has to offer.
It includes guided tours of the building including a look backstage, as well as workshops and performances by local organisations.
All four bars will be open and a new hot food menu will be unveiled in the Green Room, now renamed the Piano Bar and Restaurant.
Mr Say’s community takeover of the Pavilion was given the green light by the borough council earlier this summer.
The cafe and bars have been trading since last month and the first show was on July 19. Forthcoming events include an antiques fair, variety show, psychic event, beer festival and youth theatre productions.
Mr Say also hopes to get big name shows and gigs as well as provide a home for local arts groups.
Mr Say said: “This weekend is a showcase demonstrating what is on offer at the venue and it’s all free.
“There’s a lot of people who don’t really know what we’ve got here and we’re inviting them to come and have a look.
“Our guided tours will give people the chance to stand on stage and feel what it’s like to have the curtain rise and the spotlight on them as they stand in front of a 1,000 seat theatre.”
There will be demonstrations from Artwey in the Sun Deck and Crow’s Nest, ballroom dancing and fitness class workshops in the Ocean Room, and short performances from Weymouth Drama Club, WOW, Weymouth Operatic Society, Julie Storey’s Let’s Dance and Quay Theatre Arts in the main theatre.
Tribute band Stereoironics will play a gig in the Oceam Room on Saturday night and there will also be music from Ken Watkins and Ed Hintze over the weekend.
The open weekend is on Saturday and Sunday and the Pavilion is open from 10am-6pm each day.
