Barefoot fundraiser enjoys musical finale to challenge
A FUNDRAISER who bared his feet for his cause enjoyed a musical finale to an epic challenge.
Rik Vanhoutteghem ran for 24 hours in bare feet to raise funds for a new home for the Durnovaria Silver Band.
The veterinary surgeon found the experience gruelling but even treading on a hedgehog could not stop him from reaching the finish line during his band’s performance in the Borough Gardens.
He spent the night running around the grass track at the Thomas Hardye School and said he would not have made it without the support of those who came on to run with him for spells and cheer him on.
Rik said: “It was tremendous fun at the beginning and amazing at the end but in between those two it was pretty awful and the night was horrendous.
“The support was tremendous though and that’s what got me through it.”
During the night Rik was running round the grass track he had become so familiar with when his foot hit something.
He said: “I turned my torch on and there was a hedgehog.”
Fortunately, it was relatively unperturbed by the incident and was moved to some nearby hedges while other than a few red marks on his feet Rik was also pretty much unscathed.
While the weather was warm Rik said he was surprised at how cold it dropped overnight, particularly underfoot.
Rik headed through Dorch-ester for his musical finale at the Borough Gardens, which he described as ‘unforgettable’.
He added: “Surprisingly my feet feel okay, which I guess says something for running in bare feet.”
The Durnovaria Silver Band is currently bidding to raise around £70,000 to purchase the former Fordington Methodist Church and convert it into a much-needed permanent home and community base.
Rik, 52, who has been playing with the band for three years, is hoping to add around £3,000.
