Thousands flock to Dorset County Show WITH RESULTS
11:33am Monday 9th September 2013 in News
THERE were fantastic displays, prize-winning animals and delicious food at the Dorset County Show.
Tens of thousands of people streamed through the gates to the annual event at Dorchester Showground, near Coker’s Frome.
The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed as families strolled around in the sunshine and ducked into marquees during some rainy showers over the weekend.
Show chairman Rick Rogers said: “We had a very high standard of entries this year, especially in the homecraft tent, we actually had to extend the tent to fit them all in.
“All the trade stands were at record levels and hopefully everyone had a really good time.”
Vanessa Henman, of Weymouth, and Sam, aged 14, Dan, 11 and Becky, aged four, enjoyed watching the show jumping before grabbing some lunch in the food tent.
Becky said: “I had fun today. I liked seeing the ponies and the horses.”
With entertainment ranging from the traditional cows, sheep, pigs and horses, to monster trucks and gymnastic displays, visitors enjoyed a family friendly atmosphere.
Mike Burt, chairman of the goat section, said: “We’ve had a lovely show and had a good number of entries.
“There was a new group of goat keepers which had never shown before which was exciting.”
Livestock entries were looking good this year and homecraft was booming thanks partially to the influence of television shows such as Kirsty Allsopp’s Handmade Britain and The Great British Bake Off.
Homecraft chairman Nicki Ralph said: “We had a huge amount of entries at a very high standard.
“People seem really interested and there was a real surge of people looking around.
“Hopefully it will inspire them to enter next year.”
The best of Dorset local produce was on offer in the Food Hall tents with cooking demonstrations from top local chefs.
Show secretary Sam McKenzie-Green said: “It went amazingly well over the weekend and everyone had a great time.
“We have had lots and lots of people, we're probably on for a record.
“The traffic flowed fantastically this year which was a big relief.”
