THREE men have been arrested following a serious assault in Weymouth town centre.
Maiden Street was cordoned off between its junction with Market Street and St Alban Street early this morning as police investigated the assault. It is now open and police left the scene at appromixately 9am.
It is understood the investigation centres around an assault on a 21-year-old man in the street which happened early this morning.
One trader nearby, who did not wish to be named, said: "I heard that a man was quite badly beaten up in a fight and was carried away on a stretcher between 6am and 7am this morning.
"There was also a large puddle of blood left on the road.
"There's always some kind of shenanigans here in the morning.
"I come in at 5am most days and there are always drinkers still out on the seafront from the night before."
A Dorset Police spokesperson said: “At 6.43am, officers were called to a report of an injured man along Maiden Street in Weymouth.
"Officers attended and located a man with a suspected eye injury. He was taken to Dorset County Hospital.
“A cordon remained in place at the scene. Three men from Weymouth were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm – a 23-year-old man and two 21-year-old men.”
